MPGe stands for “miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent”. It measures the fuel efficiency of vehicles that run on non-liquid fuels, such as hybrid and electric models.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) came up with the unit of measurement for the electric car’s energy consumption level to compare with gas-powered vehicles. The formula for MPGe can be calculated like this: 33.7 kWh of electricity = 1 gallon of gas.

Higher numbers are better for this metric.

To be clear, good MPGe ratings don’t necessarily mean the best electric range. Instead, a high MPGe rating shows that a car makes the best use of its electrical power.

Although MPGe directly compares energy consumption between EVs and conventional vehicles, it does not address the energy cost to operate an EV. This is when we turn to the EV-specific metric, kWh/100 miles.
